At Home Instead Senior Care we employ, train and develop people to become outstanding CAREGivers. The heart and soul of our business, our CAREGivers are local residents of Sydney's Inner West & North Western Suburbs, many of whom have cared for an older loved one themselves and have developed a genuine passion and interest in older people. Our CAREGivers are fully insured and undergo an intensive three phase interview process, including no less than six reference checks and a criminal background check.
Home Instead's exclusive multi-phase training programs equip each new CAREGiver with the skills they need to provide the best care for their clients. These training programs have been specifically created to ensure our employees are well prepared to handle any CAREGiving situation. Our training also provides a pathway for all CAREGivers to obtain a Certificate III in Individual Support. Training topics include effective communication with seniors, activity planning, recognising illnesses and depression, safety, and more.
In 2008, Home Instead Senior Care became the first private provider of home care services to establish a specialist dementia care training program delivered exclusively to its own CAREGivers, which complements other professionally developed in-house training programs provided by Home Instead Senior Care. This particular program allows CAREGivers to:
- Maintain a safe environment for your loved one.
- Manage changing behaviours.
- Provide nutritious meals.
- Provide effective mind-stimulating activities.
- Create social interaction.
- Supervise daily activities, and more.

The training provided to our CAREGivers, combined with our regular meetings and training program updates, ensures that your loved one will be safe in the hands of a trusted and compassionate professional throughout their service — setting your mind at ease.
Julie has worked approx. 5,000 hours by helping care for over 100 clients.
Julie has proven to Home Instead that she is an exceptional CAREGiver with her empathy, being proactive, reliability, and caring nature that she should be our nominated National CAREGiver of the Year. She will go above and beyond to help all her clients with her harmonious relationship and her skills necessary to manage what other CAREGivers find too difficult. She is a bright spot in a client's day as always looks on the positive side with a friendly and kind manner. With her smile, sense of humour she can rapidly build a rapport with clients who have varying abilities and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Julie has completed all Home Instead Training resulting in Certificate III in Home & Community Care. Through her studies Julie has grown in knowledge, confidence and hence give outstanding service. Julie does overnight shifts when required and reports on any medical concerns and WPH & Safety hazards to the office. She has done back to back shifts e.g. finishing one late afternoon shift and then going to an overnight stay to another client.
She has had many overnights helping two retired nuns for the Good Samaritan Charity and on one particular night saved a nun from near death. Apparently the nun was trying to kill a spider in her room by throwing a bucket of water on it when the nun slipped over and broke her ankle-Julie to the rescue- helped the nun to her bed, calmed her down, rang 000 then also able to take care of the dog "Benedict". The Sisters in charge have a very high regard for Julie and Sister Mary Conkey was more than happy to a testimonial.
Julie has also many clients with Dementia. She took one lovely gentleman on outings when his daughter was overseas and took photos of event so she can remember her father having a good time. Julie is always looking for ways to connect with the client and family through the client's interests and life histories. When visiting the same client another time she noticed he was finding it difficult to walk and asked if he could take off his shoe as he may have a stone there. To her amazement she discovered one toe nail had cut into the other toe and hence bleeding. She advised the office and arrangements were made to see the podiatrist the next day.
David Waterman Nomination for CAREGiver of the YEAR David began working for Home Instead Senior Care Northwest Sydney in July 2010.
Since being a CAREGiver with us, David has stood out as an exceptional CAREGiver with a very caring nature.
Many of David's clients have been through brokerage and our experience in the office has been a gradual demand for David to the point where we have had to hold back some requests due to not enough hours in a day and not enough days in the week!
David has been involved with clients with complex needs and difficult personalities. David's gentle presence and genuine interest in people has enabled him to succeed where many have failed. David is innovative and client focussed. David goes out of his way to understand client’s needs. He is always looking for ways to connect with clients through the clients’ interests and life histories. David is also excellent connecting with the clients wife/or husband who generally are the primary carers.
His deep respect for the client extends to the clients family/ friend or loved one. David is a great communicator not only with clients but also with office staff. David keeps us informed of clients’ needs and is first to involve himself in our training programs. David is not shy to talk to us when challenges in Caregiving arise and is more than happy to accommodate unusual requests.
Not only is David great with clients but he makes our work in the office a breeze. His Timesheets arrive on time, always attends CAREGiver meetings, keen to liaise with other CAREGivers who may share his clients and alerts us to changes in clients immediately.
